Jail Library

In the 1970s, the Junior League of Kingston worked on a large and progressive project creating a library at the Ulster County Jail. Members created, organized and ran a library for inmates to use. The Jail Library project was developed by Nancy O’Hara, who remained a Sustaining Member of the Junior League of Kingston until she passed away in 2011. Ms. O’Hara worked tirelessly on the library project as a volunteer for the League. At the time, the League would work on a project for three years to create a foundation for the community organization to take the project and make it their own. After the League turned the project over to the Jail to run independently, Ms. O’Hara sought employment with the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office where she continued her work with the jail library and the inmates it served.
